DAY: 51  DATE: Tuesday, Aug. 7  MILES: 397  TOTAL MILES: 7459  LOCATION: Galesburg, IL

COMMENTS:

All night long we heard Holy Armageddon going on outside. There was a tornado warning in a town called Atlantic, IA some 50 miles to the east of us. I don't know if one really touched down. Though, while we were riding today we saw an overturned semi around Des Moines. So that clears up the burning curiosity you all had whether we actually got underway today.

I went on line today and saw that the majority of the storms had gone by but were essentially following I-80. So we dawdled around a little bit to give them a good head start, donned our foul weather gear, stowed the camera, and took off. It was pretty threatening straight ahead but to the south it was beautiful blue.

When we gassed up first thing this am we talked to a couple who were heading to NYC via I's 74 and 70. Hmmmm, an idea to ponder. Then when we stopped for gas and a break a couple of hours later, we met another couple who were headed to Pittsburg via I's 74 and 70. Hmmmm again.

Well, the plus side would be that it would lead us into clear but hot weather and take us out of the storms that were developing ahead of us for this evening and Wednesday morning around Chicago. The negative side would be that we would not be able to visit Connie's Aunt and Uncle in Zeeland, MI.  Much to Connie's disappointment I decided I'd had enough of the rain and headed south. We'll have to make a special trip up to MI and then on to this Week-Before-Bike Week at Sturgis.

We crossed the Mississippi one more time and headed south into the sun and heat (93) of Illinois. Zumo tells me I am 866 miles from home. It's been two months and I'm ready to get there. My butt is sore, I'm tired of living out of a trailer, side bags, motels, I just want to park Big Blue and have a cold one at Pussers. Friday is lookin' good!
